Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commissions (NCC), Prof. Umaru Garba Danbatta, has said that the number of active subscribers in the telecom network were more than 152 million.
He explained that teledensity, which is measured as one telephone to 100 of population, were above 107 percent, while internet penetration has continued to rise to more than 97 million.
Danbatta, who made this remark over the weekend shortly before the end of the Abuja International Trade Fair, maintained that Nigeria has achieved more than 20 per cent penetration as reported by the International Telecommunication Union.
The EVC explained that the development showed that Nigeria were near to the 2018 target of 30 per cent broadband penetration as proposed by the national broadband strategy report, The Sun reports.
“This indicated that the commissions efforts in pursuing a robust broadband deployment programme through the open access model of fibre optic infrastructure provision licensing and auctioning of broadband spectrum licenses are yielding fruitful results,” he said.
On text messages, the EVC who was represented during the event entitled: “NCC Day” at the fair by Reuben Muoka, disclosed that the commission had empowered the consumers to determine, which messages to receive.
