The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the death of two girls, Faith and Marvellous Godspower, when the wall of the building in which they were sleeping at No. 23 Ayesanmi Street, Odojomu Ondo, Ondo State, collapsed on Thursday.
While Faith was seven-year-old, her sister, Marvellous, was four-year-old.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Femi Joseph, described the incident as unfortunate and said the command had commenced investigation into it.
“It is very unfortunate that such an incident happened, but we have commenced our investigation,” Joseph stated.
A source said the incident occurred during a downpour and residents of the neighbourhood made efforts to save the siblings by pulling them out of the rubble, but the efforts were not successful.
“The children were sleeping on the same bed while their mother and their other sibling were downstairs, but the wall of their room collapsed and fell on Faith and Marvellous,” the source stated.
Speaking on the incident, the father of the deceased, Mr Joseph Godspower, said he was in Ore town when the rain started and he rushed home in order to evacuate the children from the house due to the flood they often encounter in the area.
He added that on getting to the house, he met the corpses of his children, adding that the incident devastated him and his wife.
Godspower stated that in addition to the death of his children, he also lost his property to the flood.
“I want Nigerians to help; I have lost many things; apart from the death of the children, the only clothes that my wife and I are wearing are the only property we have left; flood has destroyed every other thing,” he lamented. Punch Metro
