At least six people have been killed and several others injured after heavy rainstorms and flood hit the Italian city of Livorno.

Italian newspaper II Tirreno reports  that four members of a family were killed by the flood when their basement apartment got flooded. Two other people were reported missing.

One girl was rescued by her grandfather, but unfortunately he died when he returned to rescue other members of his family, the newspaper said.

“The city is literally devastated,” said Leghorn Mayor Filippo Nogarin, adding that “a crazy amount of rain” pummeled the area in just a few hours.

The city in Tuscany was the worst hit, but weather warnings have been issued to other parts of the country to  safeguard the lives and properties of people.

Precautions are being taken in the capital, Rome, where the highest level of alert is in place.

Nogarin appealed for volunteers to help. The city of 170,000 is also a popular spot for travelers catching ferries to the islands of Elba and Sardinia.
