The African Bar Association says it has received with serious shock and concern the reports emanating from Nigeria that several Judges have experienced the invasion of their homes while others have been arrested by State security agents apparently without due process.
President of the Association, Hannibal Uwaifo, Saturday condemned the actions of the DSS “The activities of these agents appear to be a violation of the principles of the rule of Law and undermine Nigeria,’s international obligations to uphold the rule and the tenets of Separation of powers upon which Democracy rests”.
The African Bar Association demands the immediate release of all detained Judges and judicial officers, the stoppage of further invasion of their homes under any guise and strict obedience to the rule of Law.
The African bar believes that these grave violations represents a serious set back for the growth and development of Nigeria and will not in anyway portray Nigeria and Africa in positive light on the international arena.
Uwaifo said that the African bar association will be working with the Nigerian bar Association to ensure that these grave violations are quickly and decisively addressed.
“While Afba condemns Corruption in all it forms particularly in the Judiciary, it will not tolerate the use of Gestapo tactics or any other extra legal means to address the same”.
The Association will fully hold the Nigerian Government accountable, if these unorthodox means of governance are not ceased immediately, he said.
